Do You Have a Lump Under Your Skin?
Professional medical evaluation for subcutaneous masses (lipomas and other lesions).
Not all lumps are lipomas. At Border Health we perform a complete medical evaluation and, if necessary, request an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis before any procedure.
Not All Lumps Are Lipomas
Many people discover a "fatty lump" and assume it's a lipoma. However, a subcutaneous mass can correspond to different diagnoses that require different management.
It could be a lipoma
A benign fatty tissue mass, soft and slow-growing.
It could be a cyst
An encapsulated lesion with contents different from fatty tissue.
It could be inflammatory
Abscesses or infectious processes can mimic lipomas.
It may require further study
Some masses need ultrasound to confirm depth and characteristics.
Before thinking about removing it, it is essential to know exactly what it is.
Our Approach: Diagnosis First, Then Decision
Safety begins with a proper evaluation.
Medical Evaluation

- Time of evolution
- Recent changes

In many cases, the clinical diagnosis is suggestive, but not definitive.
Soft Tissue Ultrasound
When the mass requires it, we request an ultrasound to:
This step is key to deciding if it can be removed on an outpatient basis or requires a different type of management.

When it increases in size over time.

When the patient wishes to have it removed for appearance.
Diagnostic uncertainty
If the study suggests removal for analysis is best.
Not all lipomas require immediate removal. In some cases, periodic monitoring with scheduled medical check-ups may be chosen.

Outpatient procedure
Performed in the office without hospitalization
No hospitalization required
The patient goes home the same day

Most lipomas are benign. However, any new mass should be professionally evaluated to rule out other conditions.
