Lipoma Evaluation - Border Health

Do You Have a Lump Under Your Skin?

Professional medical evaluation for subcutaneous masses (lipomas and other lesions).

Not all lumps are lipomas. At Border Health we perform a complete medical evaluation and, if necessary, request an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis before any procedure.

Not All Lumps Are Lipomas

Many people discover a "fatty lump" and assume it's a lipoma. However, a subcutaneous mass can correspond to different diagnoses that require different management.

It could be a lipoma

A benign fatty tissue mass, soft and slow-growing.

It could be a cyst

An encapsulated lesion with contents different from fatty tissue.

It could be inflammatory

Abscesses or infectious processes can mimic lipomas.

It may require further study

Some masses need ultrasound to confirm depth and characteristics.

Before thinking about removing it, it is essential to know exactly what it is.

Our Approach: Diagnosis First, Then Decision

Safety begins with a proper evaluation.

Step 1

Medical Evaluation

Detailed clinical history

  • Time of evolution
  • Recent changes
  • Pain or discomfort

Complete physical examination

  • Size assessment
  • Mass mobility
  • Estimated depth

In many cases, the clinical diagnosis is suggestive, but not definitive.

Step 2

Soft Tissue Ultrasound

When the mass requires it, we request an ultrasound to:

Confirm if it's a lipoma
Determine depth
Evaluate relationship with nearby structures
Measure exact dimensions
Rule out atypical characteristics

This step is key to deciding if it can be removed on an outpatient basis or requires a different type of management.

When Can Removal Be Considered?

Progressive growth

When it increases in size over time.

Pain or discomfort

If it causes discomfort with movement or pressure.

Cosmetic reasons

When the patient wishes to have it removed for appearance.

Diagnostic uncertainty

If the study suggests removal for analysis is best.

Not all lipomas require immediate removal. In some cases, periodic monitoring with scheduled medical check-ups may be chosen.

Minimally Invasive Procedure

If the ultrasound confirms that it is a superficial lesion suitable for office management, a minimally invasive procedure can be performed under local anesthesia.

Outpatient procedure

Performed in the office without hospitalization

No hospitalization required

The patient goes home the same day

Quick recovery

Return to activities within a few days

Follow-up care

Scheduled reviews to monitor progress

Always performed under clear medical criteria and after a complete evaluation.

Cases Requiring Referral

Transparency and professional ethics

Deep lesions
Large size
Rapid growth
Atypical characteristics on ultrasound
Location near important structures

In these cases, we guide the patient toward the appropriate specialist.

We Answer Your Questions

Frequently asked questions about lipomas and subcutaneous masses

It cannot be confirmed by touch alone. Medical evaluation and, in some cases, ultrasound are needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Most lipomas are benign. However, any new mass should be professionally evaluated to rule out other conditions.

When indicated, it is performed under local anesthesia. Most patients tolerate it well.

If completely removed, it is uncommon for it to reappear at the same site, although some people may develop new lipomas in other areas.

Medical Recommendation

Never try to remove, squeeze, or manipulate a subcutaneous mass on your own. This can cause infections, unnecessary pain, and complications. Always seek professional medical evaluation.
